Voice II is subtly louder and more characteristic of the 50s. When you push the gain and engage the Mid-Kick function, the V40 takes on a more 60s British voice for timeless blues-rock tones. Single Channel & Voice Switch
You can go from clean 60s Californian sounds with single coils to mid-60s British overdrive, all on a single channel. Voice II subtly boosts the mids at the input for more punch and cut.
Mid Kick
This works in conjunction with the Middle pot to boost the middle frequencies in the EQ section. The more you push the Middle pot, the more it pushes the driven sounds, particularly with humbuckers.
Reverb
The V40 The Duchess uses a digital reverb section that sits somewhere between a plate and a hall type sound. Its tone is "sweeter" and more "modern" than a traditional spring reverb. It is also hard-bypassed if you want it totally out of the circuit.
Series Effects Loop
The hard-bypass effects loop allows you to use delays, reverbs, etc. after the amp's preamp section to keep them clean. If they aren't as clean as you'd like, try turning down the pedal's mix/output, especially when turning up the amp's master.
Low Power Options
The front panel switch offers a low power mode for approximately 7 watts. Plus, you can use the single-ended mode which selects one or the other of the power valves in Class A operation (use them evenly so the wear is about equal). The combination of low power and single-ended mode will bring the output below 1 watt RMS.
6L6 or EL34 Power Valves
The V40 gives you the option of using EL34 or 6L6 power valves. They offer subtly different tonal characteristics in terms of power stage saturation and also overall frequency response. Notice we said subtle! There is a bias range switch to get you into the right range, but fine-tuning of the bias is also advised whenever you change power valves.
All the features and sounds are present in the lunchbox version of the V40 Duchess, but this version has a wooden sleeve with leather corners, a leather handle and a luxury Victory logo, adding an extra layer of British craftsmanship to the family.
