The legendary experience of Roland's Space Echo RE-201 returns in an advanced echo pedal with modern features.
Introduced in 1974, Roland's Space Echo RE-201 is one of the most legendary and sought-after effects units ever produced. This tape classic has remained in production for over 14 consecutive years, and its distinctive rhythmic echo sounds, warm character, and highly playable sonic quirks continue to inspire musicians, producers, and audio mixers for over four decades.
The RE-202 faithfully delivers the authentic sound and behavior of Space Echo like never before. This advanced pedal captures the magic of the RE-201 in impeccable detail, from the tape and motor properties to the vibrant spring reverb and colorful preamp circuitry. And to go even further, the retro Space Echo experience has been expanded with many new features tailored to today's music.
Retro sound at your fingertips
All the basic controls from the original are here, including the iconic 12-way mode dial. Every behavior is reproduced with complete precision, like the gradual pitch change that occurs when the Repeat Rate knob is changed, or the cool feedback that occurs when the Intensity knob is at maximum.
With selectable band age and variable controls, you can dial in everything from a brand new Space Echo to the worn character and quirks of a beloved retro piece. The saturation control has been carefully calibrated to the RE-201's actual tape and preamp behaviors, with the sound becoming warmer and more compressed as you turn the knob. And with the expressive Wow & Flutter control, you can evoke all the natural modulation characteristics that are essential to the Space Echo sound.
Sound improvements
The RE-202 includes many new features that expand the Space Echo for today's musicians. Dual echo time is available, as well as a fourth virtual tape head that unlocks five additional sound combinations. There is also a type of echo that changes the distance between the heads, which is not possible with the original. Unlike the mono RE-201, the RE-202 offers true stereo input/output and selectable operation for guitar or line level devices. For unprocessed sound, you can choose between the warm, fat tone of the RE-201 preamp or a clean signal without any processing.
A stereo version of the RE-201's original spring reverb sound is also included, along with hall, plate, room, and surround types for added versatility. Expressive Warp and Twist effects are also available, allowing you to throw sound spatially with the press of a footswitch while playing.
Modern control
To complement its retro heart and soul, the RE-202 has all the modern features you'd expect from an advanced echo pedal. There are four onboard memories for storing and recalling favorite sounds, and a further 123 can be accessed using MIDI program switching. Tape-tempo is also on hand, as is selectable echo carry when changing memories. It is also possible to cut the unprocessed signal for parallel effects setups and studio use. Extensive control is available via external footswitches, an expression pedal and MIDI, including real-time operation of multiple parameters at once.
