The Ripped Speaker is a modern fuzz with old school roots and pays homage to one of the ways early distorted guitar and bass sounds were produced. When the fuzz is set low, the pedal emulates the lo-fi distortion sounds of yesteryear, the kind of sounds created by a razor blade applied to the cone of a speaker, a loose tube or a faulty channel on a recording console. When you operate the pedal, the sound is transformed. It's modern and monumental, with a searing, fully saturated fuzz sound.
The ripped speaker's RIP knob is a bias control that determines the amount of clipping at the top and bottom of the signal waveform. It adds a lot of versatility and allows you to customize the character of the fuzz. Noon is neutral, a position where the fuzz is perfectly biased... fat, with good bite at the bottom and top of the wave without being harsh. When you turn the knob clockwise, the pedal produces a "hard gating" effect and the signal stutters and muffles. This is perfect for creating a dying drum effect. Turning the knob counterclockwise results in a different style of fuzz with a gentler gating effect where the signal dies out quickly.
The Ripped speaker's TONE control is active and delivers a tilt-shift type EQ. This means that at noon the EQ is flat. As you turn the knob counterclockwise, the frequency response becomes darker, with more pronounced bass and less pronounced treble. By turning the knob clockwise, the frequency response becomes clearer with more treble and less bass.
The Ripped Speaker features true bypass switching, is equipped with a 9-volt battery, and accepts a standard 9-volt EHX power supply.
