Whether you want to sustain single notes or generate ambient, multi-layered soundscapes, the MXR Layers pedal will expand your instrument’s creative potential. MAINTAIN YOUR TONE
The MXR Layers pedal will bestow its expertly crafted sustain and natural decay upon up to three layers, each with its own mini LED to indicate that it is active. First, decide whether you want to run a single layer or up to three; engaging the Single switch keeps it at one. Layers can be triggered both with the footswitch and by your playing dynamics. With the footswitch, you simply play a note or chord and hold the switch down; releasing the switch will allow the layer to fade out according to your Decay knob setting. This is perfect for composing complex solos over droning accompaniment. Alternatively, you can trigger layers automatically in response to your picking attack, as defined by the Trig knob. Combine these two methods for more complex and creative sound stacking: with Single mode disengaged, you can hold a layer with the footswitch and then automatically trigger additional layers on top.
STACKED WITH OPTIONS
The MXR Layers pedal offers a simple set of controls to customize your layers to your liking. The Mix knob adjusts the level of the processed signal; in other words, the volume of your layers. As noted previously, the Trig knob sets the sensitivity of the pedal’s auto-trigger function, allowing you to generate new layers based on the intensity of your pick strikes. The Attack knob adjusts the fade-in time of each layer, while the aforementioned Decay knob sets the fade-out time, which mimics the natural vibrations of a physical string by rolling off high frequencies first. For thick, subterranean ambiance, engage the Sub Oct switch to drop one or more of your layers down an octave.
DEEP LAYERS
Beyond the core functionality, the MXR Layers pedal offers experimenters even more complex possibilities to customize not just the sound of your layers, but the overall playing experience. Using the pedal's programming features, you can adjust additional parameters, including modulation intensity, delay time, diffusion, and more. You can also use your keyboard's sustain pedal or another external switch like the MXR Split + Tap to trigger your layers, blend parameter configurations with the Volume(X)™ 8 pedal, and run stereo input, stereo output, and Dry/Wet split modes.
